![]() The three main royal palaces all have treasures within. The city has excellent alternatives for damp days. If you are exploring independently, here’s a suggested priority list Nyhavn, for the bustling cafe scene and colourful merchants’ buildings the largely 18th-century architecture of the city centre, especially Amalienborg Palace (the changing of the guard takes place at noon daily) a canal cruise (the Gammel Strand pier has shorter queues than the one at Nyhavn) and the Gefion mythology fountain. Even if you’ve been before, there is always plenty more to see and do. What to see and doįirst-time visitors should concentrate on the many attractions in and around the city centre – the old buildings in the centre and the new ones around the harbour, the parks, a canal boat cruise and, especially on a rainy day, the museums. The metro system provides fast access to the airport. The city is very cycle-friendly and bikes can be hired. ![]() For a fun hour or two, electric boats can be rented to explore the harbour and canals. The hop-on hop-off bus stops at Ocean Quay. Once you are in Copenhagen’s centre, most places of interest can be reached on foot. The star-shaped Kastellet fort, Gefion Fountain, Little Mermaid statue and Design Museum are all near the Langelinie dock. From the smaller terminals, many key sights are within walking distance – even the main Kongens Nytorv square if you are reasonably fit. The Ocean Quay area is being regenerated, but you’ll still want to get to the city sights as soon as possible. Smaller ships can access the Langelinie or Nordre Toldbod quays, within walking distance of the centre. Big ships – up to four at a time – dock at Ocean Quay, two miles to the north, from where shuttle and local buses take guests to the city centre. Most cruise lines call in here from April to October as part of Baltic and or northern Europe itineraries. Frequently voted as one of the best cities in the world in which to live, Copenhagen is a confection of grand architecture, bright waterways, great food and a lively culture.
